Usually black or brown with white bands, Onyx can also come in orange, red, or the very rare honey coloured varieties. A type of chalcedony, Onyx is made from alternating broad, flat bands of black and white and if the stone is brown and white it is called Sardonyx. Onyx has long been used for decoration and jewellery. Onyx jewellery is said to help in releasing negative emotions such as grief and sorrow.
